Lush vegetation borders the white-sands and a little exploration could find you swimming in a secluded lagoon or marvelling at one of the natural waterfalls that feed the rivers and sea. For a full on Cuban party vibe many people head to Varadero, close to the capital, while those in need of R&R away from the hustle and bustle may opt for the quieter resorts of Guardalevaca in the north east of the island.
Havana, famous for its cigars and rum, is the capital of Cuba. The shores are wreathed with glistening water and the city itself speaks of days gone by. Spanish influences are obvious in a lot of the architecture, harking back to when Christopher Columbus first claimed Cuba for the Spanish dynasty. The imposing Catedral de San Cristoal can be found in the Vieja quarter; an almost Gothic building that is visited by tourists and worshippers throughout the year.
Your holiday trip to Cuba should also include a visit to Real de Tabacos Partagas, one of Cuba’s oldest cigar factories but if this isn’t up your street, you could relax in the famous ‘Hemingway’s Bar’ with a traditional Mojito.
If beaches are more your style, a Cuban holiday will see you well catered for; Cuba’s beaches are well known for their excellence and cleanliness, but you may be surprised to hear that some of them are also international conservation areas. The seas around the island harbour rare corals and unique breeds of marine life that can be seen through a diving mask or on local boat tours.
