This unique Caribbean destination has so much to offer. A rich cultural blend of African, Spanish, and Haitian influences create a lively, diverse culture. The natural environment is also diverse, with beaches, mountains, jungles, pine forests, desert and coral reefs.
The Dominican’s idyllic Caribbean beaches have white powder sands and pale turquoise seas. The south coast offers the quiet, relaxing beaches often associated with Caribbean holidays. The north coast attracts more active visitors, with its diverse environment and wealth of watersports. Here you can explore rainforests, go boogie boarding, windsurfing and rock climbing.
If you’re an eco-tourist, the Samana Peninsula on the northeast coast is for you. Here’s where you can see humpbacked whales in their natural habitat. The main tourist area is Bavaro, where all-inclusive holidays are popular.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular in the Dominican Republic. It’s a top destination for experienced divers, and is also suitable for beginners. Fishing and golf is also popular here. There are many world class golf courses.
If you like hustle and bustle, visit Santa Domingo, the capital city. It’s the oldest city in the new world, and boasts the first cathedral, university and hospital of the Americas.
The climate is tropical, with a wet season from May to November. The main annual temperature is between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius. The currency is Dominican Peso, but US Dollars are widely accepted. Spanish is the official language, but most tourist resorts and hotels speak English.
The food has a Spanish and African influence. Dishes are simple yet aromatic. A typical Dominican dish would be chicken or fish with rice and peas, flavoured with warm spices and coconut. A popular snack is sugar cane, and popular drinks are rum, beer, coffee and smoothies.
