Fuerteventura
Overview
Situated a mere 60 miles from the African coast, Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and has long been a popular destination for those seeking bargain package holidays.
Tailor made holidays are also extremely widespread, for those looking to discover life beyond the heavenly beaches and glittering waves.
The island’s name comes from Fuerte, meaning ‘strong’, and ventura, meaning ‘wind’. The strong winds that tease the surf up blow from the Sahara Desert; they are strong enough to make Sotavento Beach the chosen location for the world surfing championships each July. To maximise the airstream’s potential, kite boarders tend to favour the area by the Corralejo sand dunes, whilst hardy surfers like to spend their bargain holidays coasting the more tempestuous waters around El Cotillo. Corralejo is a popular resort town in the area with some great shopping and a beautiful harbour.
Beaches
There are over 150 beaches along the coastline ranging from Jandia to Pajara. The beaches range in colour as well as character; gold, white and black volcanic sands stand testament to the island’s volcanic past.
Activities
Travel inland and you can find secluded lagoons where you can swim, relax and enjoy the sun. Further still and you will find many places of cultural and historical interest to visit, such as the Villa de Winter at Cofete, the House of the Colonels at La Olivia or the Church de Iglesias Nuestra Senora at Pajara. Those on family holidays might like to enjoy the Oasis Park Zoo at La Lajita.
Weather
Because of the hot climate, Fuerteventura’s food is very simple, but bursting with flavour. Mojo sauce, a traditional accompaniment made with garlic, oil, vinegar and peppers, accompanies most dishes.
Much of the food here is rooted in centuries long-passed, such as ‘gofio amasado’, a mixture of gofio flour, stock, water, wine, milk, honey and potatoes. Thanks to the warm waters, fresh fish and seafood are plentiful and are often poached, grilled or fried and served with local vegetables and Mojo sauce.
Fuerteventura holidays promise a rich tapestry of culture, history, beaches, adventure and nightlife woven through one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
