Lanzarote
Overview
Just 70 miles from the African coast, Lanzarote has been a favoured holiday destination since the 1960’s. It is an island of startling and delightful contrasts, providing relaxation for those taking cheap summer holidays and fascinating diversions for those who prefer the benefits of more exclusive holidays.
Lanzarote enjoys a sun-soaked climate almost all year round, making it a perfect destination for golden-sanded beaches. However, you may want to seek out one of the famous black-sanded bays; a spectacular reminder of the island’s volcanic past.
Resorts
The Canary Islands are a well established tourist destination and many of the resorts in Lanzarote are world renowned. Head to Playa Blanca in the far south of the island for an exclusive resort and the wonderful Timanfaya National Park (along with ferry links to Fuerteventura if you fancy travelling), or for a more family orientated experience why not try Costa Tesguise, a purpose built resort with some fine tapas bars and Brit friendly restaurants, as well as a host of great facilities. For nightlife head to Puerto del Carmen, the island’s busiest resort, with around 8 miles of beach and a 2 mile strip of bars, restaurants and shops.
Activities
Lanzarote is only 36 miles long and is sure to leave you wondering how there is so much to see across such a relatively small area.
It is worth hiring a car to take in all the sights and attractions here, but, given that the island is so small, you can just as easily travel by bus or taxi, stopping off at your destinations along the way.
For the more adventurous traveller, your holiday could see you taking a camel ride around the rim of the Fire Mountains. If you’ve worked up an appetite, you can watch your meal being cooked in the Mountains’ natural, geothermic heat from the dormant volcano beneath. Or, if that makes you feel a little hot under the collar, you can experience the emerald hued Greens’ Cave; a rabbit warren of volcanic caves and tunnels that harbour a fascinating, natural optical illusion.
Food
The food and nightlife are an essential part of Lanzarote holidays; Spanish and Mediterranean dishes can be enjoyed in small tavernas or at some of the larger restaurants across the island. There are many vineyards in Lanzarote and many offer tours and tastings, so by the time you come to order your meal, you may have a good idea of what is on offer.
Whatever you choose to do on your cheap Lanzarote holidays, you are sure to come home with an abundance of amazing memories.
