Overview
Tenerife is a small island, covering a mere 785 square miles. Like the other Canary Islands, it is of volcanic origin and its landscape can almost be lunar in parts, with imposing mountains and gaping craters acting as a reminder to the eruptions that took place here over 3 million years ago.
Although world-famous as an international party spot in Playa de las Americas, Tenerife also acts as host to many family holidays and tailor-made holidays.
Resorts
For many, budget package deals mean the chance to take advantage of the many cheap and lively bars, nightspots and sun-drenched beaches. With many of the world’s most famous DJ’s and party hosts coming to this island’s biggest nightspot, Playa de las Americas, you might be fooled into thinking that revelry is all that Tenerife has to offer. However, resorts like Los Cristianos offer a more low key holiday with a picturesque town and rugged coastline while the resorts of Costa Adeje offer something for everyone but tend to attract those who are looking for a more peaceful break with everything on hand to ensure you barely break a sweat, however hot it is.
Culture
Those looking for a cultural break will find that Tenerife’s history is on show, pretty much wherever you go.
The Painted Cave of Galdar offers a spectacular insight into the early aboriginal civilization that once flourished here, or you may like to visit the forts of San Gabriel, where you can appreciate dramatic, old world architecture set against the almost alien backdrop of Tenerife’s unique landscape.
There are other parties available, outside of the club scene. Singing and dancing are integral parts of the welcoming festivities, with live music played on mandolins, lutes and Spanish guitars. But, be warned: the natives like to party long into the night and for days at a time! These celebrations take place all year round, so those wanting to take advantage of budget package deals in off peak times need not miss out.
Food
Tenerife’s history is reflected in its cuisine; the local produce is served up in a variety of styles, reflecting the invading cultures that have left their mark.
A selection of tapas is probably a good way to start, enabling you to sample the fresh fish, meats, vegetables and rice that are infused with heady herbs and spices. To complement your meal, you might like a glass of earthy Rioja or a Vina de Norte.
While Tenerife is undoubtedly a great destination for revellers, it also has a warm welcome to extend to those taking more traditional Tenerife holidays.
