Zakynthos
Overview
Zante is a small island, covering a mere 406 square kilometres, but Zante holidays will leave you wondering how they managed to pack so much into such a small place. To the north of the island, just off one of the many sun drenched beaches, you will find the Blue Caves.
Shaped over thousands of years by the sea, they are coated in a mauve coloured seaweed that reflect the sunlight and gives the Caves their name.
When it comes to choosing family holidays, bargain package holidays or even tailor-made holidays, Zante, surprisingly, is often over looked. With the wealth of bargain holiday deals now cropping up, we’re sure that Zante, the sunniest of the Mediterranean islands, is sure to become an extremely popular holiday destination.
Resorts
Argassi is one of the fastest growing resorts on the island, popular with families and couples, with excellent facilities while Tsivili on the east coast offers over a mile of sandy beaches and a more traditional atmosphere. Laganas is the most popular resort on the island with pretty much everything you could want in a modern tourist destination: great bars, shops and restaurants.
For this reason it’s particularly popular with a younger crowd, especially in high season. Alvkanas in the north is perhaps the most authentic of the resort towns, with a charming village along with all the usual tourist trappings. Alikes is another laid back village with a nice balance of tourist friendly amenities and traditional charm.
On the western shores, you might want to take a look at the fabulously named Dancing Rocks, so called since ancient times when Ulysses smashed his ship between them, coming back from the Trojan Wars. Or you might want to visit the Ruins of Sarakina, the remains of a huge palace built in the Pantokratoras era, by a family who made their fortune from the production of olive oil. Book cheap holidays in June and you could witness the humbling sight of female Loggerhead turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs and bury them.
The clear, warm waters that surround the island also sustain a variety of water sports. As well as snorkelling the natural wonders that each bay plays host to, there are great opportunities for surfing, sailing and fishing, as well as calmer activities for those taking family holidays.
Food
The cuisine on the island is typically Greek: simple and fresh ingredients lightly spiced and shared in convivial surroundings. A meze of fish, meat and vegetables is the best way to explore the delicacies the island has to offer, served in traditional tavernas and bars. There are many white wines to savour, such as the local Verdea, but red wines are limited in production, although the Avgoustiatis is very popular. Wines are celebrated in the capital’s wine festival in August; an event for wine buffs to mark in their diaries.
Zante has been relatively untouched by tourism. Make your holidays Zante holidays and join the growing number of people who are choosing the island as their favourite holiday destination.
