Bridgetown (Barbados)

Search: Holidays in Countries, Resorts and hotels

Barbados' busy, pocket-sized capital is an industrious little place, with a core of shops, offices, administrative buildings and traffic-clogged streets. Yet there is a real charm here, too, and a friendliness that you rarely find in capitals. Holidays in Bridgetown are a good choice - especially when you realise great beaches are walkable from the centre, too.

Beaches

There are a handful of really lovely beaches within easy reach of downtown Bridgetown - ideal if you're visiting for the day on a cruise ship. Just a short walk from the port is Brighton Beach, Brandon Beach and Carlisle Bay - all perfect for a spot of sunbathing, swimming or refuelling at a beach bar.

Shopping

Broad Street, Bridgetown's 'Oxford Street' is lined with banks, department stores and duty free shops. Its always busy, and is a good introduction to the hustle and bustle of downtown Bridgetown - with its attractive mix of big stores, small vendors and street life. Check out Roebuck Street, Swan Street and Tudor Street too for crafts, souvenirs and, of course, rum.

Eating Out

Surprisingly, for a busy capital, cheap holidays in Bridgetown are possible, and the city has plenty of good value eateries - with Barbados cuisine featuring heavily on the town's best menus. Ever-popular Brown Sugar restaurant, at Aquatic Gap, serves great, reasonably priced seafood. And seafood is what Barbados does best. Try flying fish served with a fiery yellow sauce, or Pepperpot: a meaty pork stew, should fish not be your thing (although, should you be a steak lover, you might be disappointed - beef's not popular here).

Nightlife

Bridgetown comes alive at night, with many nightspots opening up as the sun sets  - and many having stages set up right on the town's excellent beaches. Baxter's Road is the place to head for after dark excitement.  Try Harbour Lights, or the Waterfront Cafe, for steel drums bands, great food and a lively Caribbean crowd sipping rum cocktails and moving to the infectious rhythms.

Attractions and Activities

Barbados Museum, at St. Ann's Garrison, is actually housed in the former British Military Prison, and is an excellent starting point for those keen on exploring the history and culture of this fascinating island nation. Once a port for cargo ships, the lively Careenage area is now a spruced up enclave of upscale restaurants, bars, and boutiques in wrought-iron finished period buildings and warehouses. Also, the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, just on the edge of town, offers guided tours and tastings.
