Also known as Coco Key, Cayo Coco is one of a string of offshore keys, or low-lying islands, hugging the northern coast of Cuba. It's a tropical paradise of whispering palms, soft sands and elegant accommodation surrounded by turquoise waters. In short, holidays to Cayo Coco offer a blissful retreat, linked to the mainland by an impressive 27m causeway.

Beaches

White sands form a gentle barrier between this offshore playground and the lapping waves of the Atlantic - and, beyond, the world's second largest coral reef. With 15 miles of soft sands underfoot, it's no surprise that the beach never really feels crowded. Indeed, despite its popularity, the island never feels overrun. You're sure to find a perfect spot for a relaxing day, or a spot of water sports.

Eating Out

A good range of authentic Spanish-influenced menus sets the tone at Cayo Coco. Freshly made tapas, grilled swordfish, filling paella and hearty steaks are the norm here. And the prices are reasonable too. Cuban specialities include "sofrito", a sauté of onions, green peppers, garlic, served with chicken, steak or fish.

Shopping

Of course, you don't have to travel far to find the perfect cigar. Still, for healthier pursuits, we recommend searching out the island's fine crafts at the daily open air market towards the centre of the resort. Look for brightly coloured clothing, towels and wall hangings. Good buys also include 'Panama' style hats, slender enough to roll up into your luggage on your way home.

Nightlife

Relatively chilled out, holidays to Cayo Coco enjoy enough excursions after dark to keep your holiday pulsing into the evening. There are the obligatory entertainments (probably at your hotel) and the occasional beach-side shindig, with calypso and latin rhythms getting the audience to their feet. Discos are lively, when you find them, with Sol Cayo Coco offering riotous 'Rio' style cabaret.

Activities and Excursions

Along with the excellent scuba diving, Cayo Coco's a great place to explore the riches of the sea in other ways: notably deep sea fishing. There's plenty of ways to explore on land, too. There are way marked trails for bicycle trips, horseback riding or off-roading. Take the causeway back to the mainland for a daytrip to Havana, though, and you really won't be disappointed. Cayo Coco is not only a holiday lover's dream, but a bird watchers' too – this Cay (the name they give to these tiny archipelagos around here) hosts species such as the mockingbird, pelican, grey heron, and the pink flamingo – with over 30,000 birds, Cayo Coco is home to one of the biggest herds in the world.
