Say the words Costa Brava and visions of high rise hotels, over-crowded beaches and burgers bars spring to mind. Little is it known that this region is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt in the whole of the Mediterranean. Stretching from Port Bou in the very north to Barcelona in the south, the Costa Brava is probably Spain’s most famous stretch of coastline. Despite being one of the first areas in the world to be developed for tourism, the Costa Brava remains enchantingly beautiful. Described as the ‘wild coast’ - turquoise blue waters meet rugged pine-clad cliffs; secluded coves nestle between jagged rocks, and gently shelving sands lead down to azure blue seas. There are golden beaches for water sports enthusiasts, ancient towns to explore and some awe-inspiring natural wonders, from the snow-capped summits of the Pyrenees to the untamed Cadiretes Mountains.

The Costa Brava has long been the “grand daddy” of the Spanish Costas – with many of its resorts first established over 30 years ago. Lloret de Mar is big and bustling with a vibrant nightlife and the largest selection of restaurants and bars in the region. Its beaches too are top notch, with plenty of amenities and golden sands that stretch for miles. Tossa de Mar offers a more sedate holiday with flower-filled streets that wind their way up to an ancient walled fort. Here in this ancient town you’ll find stunning views of the Mediterranean and beyond. Other smaller purpose built resorts include La Pineda and Calella de la Costa in the south. Both offer excellent facilities and stunning beaches. Santa Susana with its golden beach and good facilities is another family favourite not to be missed
