Maspalomas (Spain)

Maspalomas is famed for having the best beach in Gran Canaria with 6km of undulating sand dunes. It is also neighbour to Playa del Ingles – Gran Canaria's liveliest resort, and so benefits from great facilities. Maspalomas itself has a more upmarket vibe than Playa del Ingles.

As you would expect the beach here draws in the crowds but there's enough golden sands to go around – 6km in fact. The sand dunes are outstandingly beautiful and are a haven for wildlife. You'll also find a few naturists here so be prepared to turn a blind eye if this easily offends.

As you would expect restaurants here serve an array of international cuisine, with everything from full English to seafood specialities. Many of the restaurants also offer live music in the evening.

Like most of the resorts in Gran Canaria many of the major shops are located in modern commercial centres. Faro 2 is the largest in Maspalomas and has everything from cheap souvenirs to designer goods. Neighbouring Playa del Ingles has many more commercial centres and an abundance of shops.

Nightlife here is more relaxed and sophisticated than neighbouring Playa del Ingles. Maspalomas has two nightclubs but many of the younger crowd take a short walk or taxi ride to Playa del Ingles where you'll find a plethora of bars, clubs and entertainment venues.

This being a beach and sun holiday water sports are commonplace. Other more unusual activities include a camel ride through the Maspalomas sand dunes! Families will love great value trips to Holiday World – the area's largest amusement park; and Palmitos Park with its aquarium. Mundo Aborigen, a reconstruction of an ancient Canary village, gives a real insight into Gran Canaria's history and is a fascinating excursion.
