Set on the southernmost tip of Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico is reputed to be one of the sunniest resorts on the island. In fact just a hop across the Atlantic and you could be in the Sahara! This delightful resort is built on a steep hillside with lush palms and white-washed hotels descending right down the beach. The resort is ideal for families, couples and the young but the steep nature of this resort may make it difficult for those with walking difficulties.
Puerto Rico has a crescent shaped beach with soft golden sands flanked on either side by two harbours. There are plenty of water sports available from the beach including banana rides, water-skiing and snorkelling. Fishing trips and island tours can be caught from the main Deportivo harbour.
Puerto Rico boasts some of the best restaurants in Gran Canaria; many of which are located in the main harbour where you can soak up the alfresco atmosphere and watch the luxury yachts pull in. The commercial centres offer a vast array of good value restaurants including Chinese, Indian, Thai, fast food snacks and traditional Spanish tapas.
Most of the shops are located in four modern commercial centres with Centro Civico being the largest. You'll find pretty much everything here from souvenirs to designer goods. Trendy boutiques can be found in the main harbour. For a chance to haggle with the market traders, Arguineguin market held every Tuesday is just a short taxi ride away.
As one of the liveliest spots in Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico's nightlife will be the highlight of any holiday. There are enough bars, clubs and live music here to suit all tastes with much of the action taking place in the Centro Comercial. if nightclubs aren't your thing it's easy to seek out a quieter spot.
With year round sun you'd expect plenty of water fun and that's just what Puerto Rico delivers - with its own water park (Aqua Park) situated right on the edge of town. For off the beaten track adventure try a jeep safari across the rugged desert landscape. Kids will love Sioux City Wild West Theme Park with cowboy and Indian shoot outs at high noon. And Las Palmas, the island's capital, offers a more serene excursion and a chance to wander around the island's only museum.
