More relaxed than its extrovert neighbour Magaluf, Palma Nova provides a home for home for thousands of British tourists looking for a holiday in the sun. Its beaches are definitely the best bit – that and all the usual modern facilities you would expect. Palma Nova will appeal more to families and couples than lively Magaluf, although in high season (May – Sept) you'll still find the young twentysomethings looking for full on nightlife.
There are three beaches in Palma Nova – Es Carregador, Playa de Palma Nova and Son Maties. All carry the Blue Flag rating, offer numerous water sports and enjoy soft fine sand that shelves gently into the warm Mediterranean. A palm–fringed promenade connects all three beaches.
Whatever budget you're working to there's a vast choice of restaurants in Palma Nova. If you prefer to stick to familiar names you'll find Burger king, McDonalds and Pizza Hut. Traditional Spanish cuisine is widely available and there are numerous gourmet restaurants if you want to splash out.
Generally quieter and more relaxed that Magaluf, Palma Nova still offers plenty of nightlife with typical English style pubs and Karaoke bars staying open late. There are plenty of family friendly venues here as the younger crowd tend to head into nearby Magaluf.
Shopping in Palma Nova is mainly geared to the holiday trade selling souvenirs, electronic goods and British brand names. Supermarkets are dotted throughout the resort and sell all the essentials. Nearby Calvia's weekly market is held on a Monday and is worth a look for bargain hunters. For a true Spanish shopping experience head to Palma, the island's capital – it boasts a multitude of chic designer boutiques and high street stores.
The main activities in Palma Nova are centered on the beach, with plenty of water sports and boat trips to choose from. You'll find family fun at Golf Fantasia; a mini golf park, Marineland; with its dolphins and seals and Western Water Park. There's also go–karting available in the resort. Further a field up–market Puerto Portals has a luxury marina where you can enjoy sophisticated restaurants and boutiques. Palma, the island's capital, is a hidden gem. It's one of Spain's most beautiful cities with a stunning cathedral, alfresco dining, chic boutiques and tonnes of old world charm.
